- The GPU wasn't to blame
I wrote that this Radeon 780M can't decode HEVC Main 10 on the GPU. It can. Fedora's Mesa build leaves HEVC out; ffmpeg exits 0 anyway.
- The shutdown grace that never ran
A Go proxy's 5-second shutdown grace was dead code. A real drain and socket activation fixed restarts; KillMode, a WaitGroup and a lock needed fixes too.
- Stop docker compose from orphaning anonymous volumes
Run docker compose rm -fsv, then down, in the script's EXIT trap: anonymous volumes go with their containers, named volumes stay.
- Restart a Go server under systemd without dropping requests
A systemd socket holds the port, the Go server drains on SIGTERM, KillMode=mixed spares its children: restarts refuse nothing, cut no stream within the drain.
- Prune a stale synced copy with an rsync checksum dry run
A push-direction rsync --dry-run -c gives each top-level entry of an old copy a verdict; delete only what the source holds identically, git index aside.
- Measure real btrfs disk use without sudo
Get the real on-disk size of a btrfs path, after compression and reflinked copies, by running the host's compsize in a rootful Docker container.
- Make Konsole follow Plasma's light/dark color scheme
Turn on Konsole's built-in light/dark profile sync, add a light twin of your dark profile, and test both directions with a live Plasma scheme switch.
- Konsole had the switch all along
Plasma went light and Konsole stayed dark. I dug the setting out of the binary with strings -e l. It had a checkbox, and my first test only ran in light mode.
- I kept measuring the thing next door
Two days of destructive disk cleanup on my workstation: what I misread, what a review of the plan caught, and the one mistake no measurement could catch.
- Enable VA-API HEVC decode on Fedora with an AMD GPU
Make an AMD GPU decode HEVC through VA-API on Fedora: check the hardware and the driver, install RPM Fusion's freeworld driver, prove it with a test clip.
